Die Cutting for Custom Packaging
Die cutting gives brands the ability to create precise shapes, contours, inserts, pockets, and other custom components that standard straight-line cutting cannot produce. At Petra & Holum, die cutting is one of the main manufacturing processes our Engineering Department uses to turn creative packaging concepts into functional finished products.
Our Engineering Department describes die cutting as “precision cutting using a custom-made tool, which is the die.”
While a guillotine cutter works well for straight lines and square pieces, die cutting allows us to create curves, angles, openings, and detailed shapes. This flexibility can help add dimension and visual interest to the outside of a package. However, die cutting also plays an important role inside the box.
Petra & Holum uses die cutting to create custom packaging inserts, foam components, pockets, product holders, decorative overlays, and other internal features. These pieces can help organize, support, and present the product while becoming an important part of the overall packaging design.
As our Engineering Department explains, “Die cutting kind of goes for not only outside features, but it’s mostly for inside inserts.”
Our capabilities include Brausse die cutting equipment that can handle materials up to approximately 28 by 40 inches. We can die cut several types of substrates, including paper, vinyl, board, and foam.
Die cutting can also help transform unexpected materials into custom packaging components. For one project, Petra & Holum die cut artificial grass into a specially shaped insert designed to hold a beverage can.
From a simple angled flap to an intricate exterior shape or precision product insert, die cutting gives designers greater freedom to think beyond straight lines.
